Milburn Monrush - Strengthening the Community

Milburn and Monrush were prioritised via the development of an Evaluation Framework for Peace building at Interface Areas funded by the SW Cluster Area Peace III Programme and carried out by the Institute for Conflict Research in August 2009. The project aims to establish community interaction in this single identity area. Milburn and Monrush are two protestant estates in very close proximity to one another. There are 403 Housing Executive properties. Some residents have also purchased their homes The project identified is focused on the building of community capacity, confidence, and engagement in a residential area affected by years of mistrust and sectarian division. The central focus of the project will be to promote good relations and active citizenship. At the same time a project will be developed which the community have identified as being of real significance to their area. Joint training will encourage and support the two estates in the development of more positive relationships with their neighbours and wider community. These estates are at the ‘Protestant’ north end of Cookstown with no close neighbours from the other side.
