North South Ice Hockey Partnership

North South Ice Hockey Partnership (NSIHP) is a project that uses the game of ice hockey to address sectarianism and foster mutual respect and tolerance by enabling Catholic, Protestant and youth from different ethnic backgrounds aged 14-18 to play the game together. By competing together on mixed teams in a cross border league, youths from these historically divided and emerging groups will discover common ground and forge new friendships. Prejudices will be overcome by the desire to play, have fun and win. This cross border sports project will be developed and managed by a partnership comprised of two ice hockey clubs (Belfast Junior Giants and Dundalk Bulls). The project will address the gap that currently exists in the 14-18 age group who play the sport on both sides of the border. This group has been chosen as they represent a real challenge in efforts to combat sectarianism and mistrust between communities. The target beneficiaries of this project are those from disadvantaged and areas affected by the conflict, in particular the Louth border and greater Belfast areas. Through this partnership, the desired outcome for this project will be to create opportunities for young people to meet others from different religious and cultural backgrounds and help them to develop positive attitudes to combat sectarianism and racism in their respective communities. In addition, this project is committed to establishing a meaningful and sustainable partnership between the two organisations. The project will culminate in the selection of teams comprising of players from both organisations to compete against teams in England and Scotland during the 2009-2010 season.
