Art and Conflict

The aim of this project is to provide the opportunity for arts and community practitioners to experience the process of Theatre of the Oppressed and by discussing and analysing the techniques begin to understand the methodology and replicate the process in their own good relations work with community groups. Guest artists and speakers will also present their approach in delivering projects within and between communities and create a dialogue exploring best practice in creating quality engagement at a local level and contributing to a more pluralist society. This is a unique 12 week course exploring how art processes can be used to address issues of conflict within and between communities and contribute to the construction of relationships intrinsic to the development of a tolerant, diverse and shared post conflict society. The course will involve an initial period of experiential learning concentrating on Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed techniques. This process illustrates an egalitarian methodology which creates an ethos of respect and parity between all participants and facilitators and forms the basis of an honest and respectful relationship. It is only with the security of such a climate that true dialogue, understanding and acceptance can become a reality. The remainder of the course will explore the use of other art forms, and a brief study of models of conflict and reconciliation as well as good practice models and project management. Art and other creative methodologies are best placed to tackle issues of sectarianism and racism in a safe but challenging way which offers individuals and groups the opportunity to examine their own situations, attitudes and ideas and test new perspectives and choices which make a positive change in their own lives and in the wider society. This course will equip community and arts practitioners with skills and techniques to genuinely engage with communities, make quality connections and utilise innovative tools and approaches which will advocate respect for diversity and a shared sense of identity as we move forward toward a more peaceable society. By targeting this project at facilitators, this work will have the advantage of being replicated through participants work placements which they will be required to commit to as well as through their own strands of work in the future.
