Jews Schmooze - Sounds Familiar

Jews Schmooze is an arts based initiative of the Belfast Jewish Community which aims to raise awareness of Jewish traditions and culture and seeks to find common ground with people from other faiths and none. Last year the programme was involved in the production of a play based on the history of the Jewish Community in Northern Ireland which highlighted at Ulster Bank Festival and is now transferring to New York, 4 concerts of Jewish and Arabic music which took place in a number of venues including the Waterfront Hall, two art exhibitions in partnership with the BELB and the a stand-up comedy night and film screening looking at issues of religious identity including the challenges of conversion and assimiliation. This year, Jews Schmooze will develop the Sounds Familiar programme which will build on these activities with a number of arts activities including poetry and literature readings and commissions, two specially composed piece of music based on (a) the Chronicles of Narnia, and (b) the stories of Noah and the Flood, Jonah and the Whale and Warring Families (Cain and Abel, Joseph and his brothers) - all of which occur in the 3 monotheistic texts Qu'uran, Bible and Torah and a performance of the one-act plays of the Jewish, Irish citizen Wolf Mankowitz.
