Community Relations Through Sport

Community Relations Through Sport proposes to address social exclusion, racism and sectarianism through the medium of sport and physical activity. There is widespread belief in the key role sport can play in combating social exclusion at community level, this belief is supported by recent research evidence in Ireland "Sport appeals across all social boundaries, political fault lines and geographical borders" (ESRI fair play sport and social disadvantage) The project seeks to address these social exclusion issues by engaging young poeple between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age from all religious backgrounds through a programme of capacity and confidence building, imporving self esteem thus contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive community. The programme will operate in partnership with the established community/youth organisations within the identified areas in order to empower young people to provide answers to buidling trust within divided communities. The programme model will incude the practical support from national governing bodies of sport from majority sports and minority sports including FAI, IRFU, Cricket Ireland, GAA, Badminton Ireland and Judo which will be twinned with community relations and cultural diversity workshops to allow young people to explore own culture beliefs and traditions and challenge the stereotypes in order to acknowledge and address difference.
