Citizens Now

The Donegal Youth Council believe that young people are citizens now and should be engaged in their own local communities to ensure that they have a role in the services and decisions that affect them, now and in the future. By working together on a common issue, young people from different relgions, ethnic groups, backgrounds etc. will identify the similarities between themselves, hear different perspectives and interact on a social basis. Our evaluation of our Training For Inclusion Proramme 2006 - 2008, highlighted that young people wanted to do more work around social inclsuion and equaltiy. It also highlighted 2 positive initiatives, "Agenda Day" and the Forum - the sexual health reference group. We want to build on these models of good practice by Youth Councillors developing their skills as public representatives and their awareness of racism, sectarianism and social exclusion. Through the Agenda Day model, these Youth Councillors will engage with other young people and recruit young people to a community platform to move forward actions. This will lead to increased civic particiaption among young people. The Youth Council is the only structure of its kind at Council level with the Republic of Ireland. It has provided information on inclusion to other youth participation groups. We want to continue this work with other youth participation groups to share our experience and learn from others, especially around social inclusion e.g. Belfast City Council Youth Forum/Norhtern Ireland Youth Forum, Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Investing in Children, other Comhairli na nOg.
