The JUAH Project - A Journey of Understanding, Acceptance and Healing

The JUAH Project is designed to develop a continuum of supports for former security force personnel in Donegal, who served in the Republic of Ireland during the period known as The Troubles. The focus of the project is to respond to the identified needs of former security force personnel, through focused interventions and capacity building. Interventions such as Trauma Support and Counselling will be provided based on assessed need. This will involve reaching out to members who have not engaged with support services or that the required supports were not available. There is also the problem of former security force personnel having difficulty admitting or acknowledging their problems, therefore it is advisable to engage members through the various retirement associations. Addressing areas such as sectarianism, racism, discrimination, cultural diversity, a shared heritage conflict resolution and active citizenship will be through focused Peace and Reconciliation work with the Retired Garda Associations and Irish Army i.e. ONET. On completion of the P and R Programme there will be an opportunity for members of the Garda and Irish Army to meet with members of the RUC, British Army, UDR and retired Customs Officers, in a process of transformative dialogue.
